TV scheduling

The schedule for each day can be broken down into clear segments I have categorised these segments by splitting them up into different sections!

MORNING

.breakfast shows

.relaxing wake up shows

.loose woman chat shows

.day break full of news and gossip

.news

AFTERNOON

.children’s programmes

.the news

.game shows

.antiques shows

NIGHT TIME

.documentaries

.more adult channels

.soap operas

The target audiences for these segments are......

MORNING-

.people getting ready for school

.people getting ready for work

AFTERNOON

.people that don’t work

.older people that are retired

NIGHT TIME

.adults

.older people

I think the most popular genres on television are

.soap operas

.entertainment shows- factor etc

The target audience of a terrestrial channel like bbc2

.older people

.middle aged

Roughly each channels schedule is taken up with repeats by......

.

A lot of channels have imported programmes for example

.channel 4 and E4 have channels from America for example 90210 and how I met your mother these channels are very popular as people want to see what is going on in other countries etc and they are a lot cheaper than making more and new ones.

Watershed

The term watershed is when a specific programme is not allowed to be played before then because it may have swearing in or sexual scenes it’s basically looking after the younger generation the time for the watershed is 9pm.

PREECHO

This is when they schedule a programme before a popular one so the audience will catch the end of the new programme.

HAMMOKING

This is when they put a programme between two popular ones this will hopefully attract a good target audience.

NEW TECHNOLIGIES

Remote controls have made a huge difference because now more channels are being watched as you can turn over your channel from sitting on your bed/couch etc this is because whilst an advert is on it is easier to flick over to the next channel this is called (channel hopping)

CHANNELLOYALTY

Until the 1980s there were only three channels. Cable, digital and satellite have totally changed the way in which we watch. In the 60s 70s and 80s was when people were actually loyal to their channels.
